First Step in Starting a Start-up

As some of you know, we recently wrapped up our series on Using Social Media for Business. Our next series is going to focus on creating start-ups. This blog will also serve as an information center for start-ups.

We will be focusing specifically on at-home moms (or dads) and baby boomers who have decided to start up a start-up.

First Step

The first step to consider when starting a start-up is to come up with a business idea. So, have a brainstorming session (with yourself) listing your hobbies, past experiences, skills, talents, as well as your passion. Throw in a few subjects that always interested you.

Use your list items as keywords to search Google. Check out the results to help generate some business ideas. Also, use Google Autosuggest feature for more ideas.

Then research the market to see if there is a need for any of the business ideas you come up with. In addition, use your results to get an idea of:

  • What is already out there?
  • How many businesses are offering the same products or services?
  • Who is the niche?
  • Are they willing to pay for your type of products or services?
  • Any top competitors in this niche?
  • Are any areas of the niche not being served?

We wrote a post a couple of years ago titled, What is a Niche. Go here to read it. An under-served niche can be quite lucrative for you.

Come back next week as we discuss what is the next step to consider when starting up a start-up!

As always, thank you for reading.
